Storm shelters and safe rooms keep occupants safe during a tornado or similar severe weather event. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>FEMA louvers are typically larger and heavier than other louvers. They require specialized support. They also provide protection from torrential rain, but their main purpose is impact protection. FEMA louvers are also called “Tornado louvers”, since tornados carry debris as they travel. Many seek shelter in FEMA-approved storm shelters during a tornado.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>How are they tested?\u003C\u002Fstrong> \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>FEMA louvers are tested under \u003Ca target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.fema.gov\u002Fsites\u002Fdefault\u002Ffiles\u002Fdocuments\u002Ffema_rsl_fema-p-361-safe-rooms-for-tornadoes-and-hurricanes_042025.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FEMA P-361, Section B8\u003C\u002Fa> and ICC 500, Chapter 8. These two standards deal share much of the same criteria, which is why FEMA will use the ICC 500 standards for labeling. They both primarily deal with impact testing. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The ICC 500 standards employee a two by four wood plank to determine the louver’s resilience to windborne impacts. Like impact testing conducted for AMCA 540, testers launch the wood plank at the face of the test louver. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Missiles strike the louver at key structural locations along its face. The louver must withstand each impact without losing its shape or any structural components, like blades. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The ICC 500 impact test uses a wood plank between ten to fifteen feet long, while AMCA 540 uses a plank that is eight to ten feet long. FEMA louvers are designed to resist debris impacts and keep occupants safe.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>When should you use them?\u003C\u002Fstrong> \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Install FEMA louvers in FEMA-approved storm shelters and safe rooms. During a hurricane, you will need to worry about water infiltration from constant rainfall driven by straight-line winds, as well as windborne debris. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Certain models may protect against one or the other, depending on the tests they complete under AMCA 540 and 550. The best hurricane louvers hold listings for both tests. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>How are they tested?\u003C\u002Fstrong> \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The Miami-Dade County Building Department set the original testing standards for hurricane louvers. In recent years, the HVAC industry has turned to AMCA and its dual standards for hurricane louvers. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>AMCA 540 and 550 test louvers in similar ways to the Miami-Dade standards, but with an approach that is more focused on louvers. \u003Ca target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.amca.org\u002Fassets\u002Fresources\u002Fpublic\u002FStandards%20for%20Member%20Download\u002Famca-540-23.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AMCA 540\u003C\u002Fa> tests a louver’s ability to resist windborne debris impacts. Like the FEMA test, testers launch a two by four wood plank at the louver. This determines the louver’s resilience to high velocity impacts. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>If the louver keeps its shape and remains fully intact, the manufacturer will receive an AMCA Listing Label to signify the louver has completed the impact testing. The label for 540 testing will include whether the louver provides basic or enhanced protection. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>For AMCA 550 testing, the louver is installed in a test chamber that measures water infiltration from high velocity wind driven rain. Water is blown towards the louver’s face by a fan, simulating wind driven rain in a hurricane. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The louver must reject 99% of incoming rainfall to receive an AMCA Listing Label for 550 testing. Otherwise, the louver fails the test. The listing label for 550 will include whether the blades were fully open or closed. Fixed-blade louvers can be listed as \"blades closed\" if they are installed with a damper that closes during a storm. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Louvers that pass AMCA 540 and 550 testing receive a listing label for both tests.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>When should you use them?\u003C\u002Fstrong> \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Install hurricane louvers in buildings that require hurricane protection. If your project resides on a coastline, then you will probably need hurricane louvers in your ventilation openings.
