You may hear the term “wind driven rain” when browsing for potential louvers. During severe weather, winds can blow rainwater through the face of a standard louver. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Severe weather louvers will have features in place to prevent this. However, testing is the main difference between standard louvers and severe weather louvers. These two louver types can look the same when set side by side. The true difference will be the tests completed.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch2>How are severe weather louvers tested?\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>Testing is important for louvers. Louver types will often look the same. Testing helps differentiate each louver type. Severe weather louvers are tested for wind driven rain protection in accordance with AMCA Standard 500-L. The wind driven rain test is considered the baseline for severe weather protection, because it accounts for heavy rainfall blown towards the louver at high wind speeds. \u003Ca target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fawv.com\u002Fblog\u002Fstorm-ready-testing-for-louvers\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Check out our blog\u003C\u002Fa> on louver testing for details on this and other louver tests.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Wind driven rain tests measure the amount of rain rejected by a sample louver at a predetermined wind speed and rainfall rate, while the system draws air through the louver. In other words, the test system will draw air through the louver while rain is blown at the louver’s face. In the next phase, the rainfall rate increases to eight inches per hour, and the wind speed increases to 50 miles per hour (80.47 kilometers per hour). \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Testers measure water infiltration at the same intervals until the core intake speed reaches five meters per second. For each interval, testers will assign an effectiveness rating class of A, B, C, or D. Effective rating class A means the louver rejected 99% or more of wind driven rain during that interval of the test. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The effectiveness rating decreases to more than 95% for class B, and more than 80% for class C. Class D is considered a failing rating, because the louver failed to reject 80% or less of incoming rain.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Results are compiled into a data table, which louver manufacturers will display on the louver’s submittal. This standard measures a louver’s capabilities to reject rainfall during a hurricane. Unlike the standard wind driven rain test, a louver must reject over 99% of incoming wind driven rain to receive a listing label for AMCA 550. Otherwise, the louver fails the test.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Whether it’s the standard wind driven rain or AMCA 550, the louver’s submittal will have a label that indicates which tests were completed in accordance with AMCA’s standards. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>If you see test data on a submittal, then be sure to look for the labels. For wind driven rain, look for the AMCA Certified Rating Seal for Wind Driven Rain. There is no test data for AMCA 550 since it is a pass-or-fail test, but there will be a Listing Label for high velocity wind driven rain.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch2>Why choose wind driven rain louvers?\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>The short answer is “requirements”. With the changing climate comes new standards and requirements for severe weather protection. Buildings will need to handle severe weather conditions regardless of their locale.
